Privacy Policy for Showmark

Last updated: 2026-09-11

Showmark draws temporary annotations on the page you are looking at. Your drawings, the pages you visit and anything you type stay in your browser. The extension collects anonymous usage statistics about its own controls, and you can turn that off at any time.

What stays on your device

Your interface preferences: the selected drawing tool, color, auto-erase timing, custom keyboard shortcuts, the toolbar's position and collapsed state, and whether usage statistics are on. These are saved on your device using the browser's local extension storage.

Annotations you draw exist only while the overlay is open. They are discarded when you exit Showmark, reload, or navigate away. They are never saved or sent anywhere.

Anonymous usage statistics

To learn which features matter, Showmark counts how its own controls are used. Each install gets a random identifier that is not linked to your name, email address, Google account or browsing history. Each record contains:

Never collected: page addresses (URLs), page titles or content, your drawings, what you type, keystrokes other than Showmark's own shortcuts, or anything that identifies you. Your IP address is discarded on arrival and never stored.

These statistics are processed by PostHog (PostHog, Inc.) on servers in the European Union and used only to improve Showmark. They are not sold, and not shared with anyone else. PostHog's privacy policy: https://posthog.com/privacy. Usage statistics are kept for no longer than 12 months.

Turning statistics off

Open Showmark's settings (right-click the Showmark icon and choose Options, or click the gear in the drawing toolbar) and switch off "Share anonymous usage data". Showmark sends one last record saying statistics were turned off, so opt-outs can be counted, deletes the random identifier, and sends nothing after that. Turning statistics back on creates a new random identifier.

What the extension does not do

Deleting your data

Uninstalling the extension removes all stored preferences. Usage statistics cannot be traced back to you, and are deleted automatically within 12 months.

Changes to this policy

If these practices ever change, this document and the Chrome Web Store listing will be updated before the change ships.
